Three New Hyenas Join the Gorongosa Ecosystem: A Milestone in Wildlife Restoration

Gorongosa National Park, renowned for its biodiversity and ongoing restoration efforts, has welcomed three new hyenas to its ecosystem. On November 12, the park received one male and two female hyenas from the Karingani Game Reserve, marking a significant step forward in the park’s hyena reintroduction project.

Since the project began in July 2022, a total of 15 hyenas have been successfully reintroduced to Gorongosa. These remarkable predators are playing a key role in transforming the park’s ecology, with their unique behaviours benefiting the entire ecosystem.

The Role of Hyenas in Gorongosa’s Ecosystem

Hyenas are essential to maintaining the balance of Gorongosa’s ecosystem. As scavengers, they help break down carcasses, speeding up decomposition and preventing the contamination of water sources. This, in turn, reduces the risk of diseases and limits the growth of insects that thrive on decaying meat. Their presence also plays a crucial role in controlling the populations of other carnivores.

By preying on smaller carnivores, hyenas encourage them to hunt more efficiently, helping to maintain healthy predator-prey dynamics across the park.

A Strategic Move for Conservation

The reintroduction of hyenas to Gorongosa is part of a broader conservation strategy that aims to restore animal populations, control overpopulation, and preserve genetic diversity. The process involves meticulous planning and collaboration between conservation organisations, government authorities, and local communities. Every move is carefully coordinated to ensure the wellbeing of both the animals and the surrounding human populations.

In this instance, after the necessary permits were obtained, veterinarians from Karingani assessed the health of each hyena before sedating them for transport. The animals’ health and stress levels were closely monitored during the journey to ensure a smooth transition. Upon arrival at Gorongosa, the hyenas were once again examined by the park’s veterinary team, vaccinated, and placed into a secure boma where they could acclimatize to their new environment.

Monitoring and Integration: Ensuring Long-Term Success

To better understand the hyenas’ movements and health, several received GPS collars, allowing researchers to track their progress and ensure a successful integration into the park’s ecosystem. Known for their complex social structures, hyenas can sometimes struggle when joining a new pack. The monitoring process will provide valuable insights into their social dynamics and their role in the ecological restoration of Gorongosa.

The arrival of these three hyenas brings renewed hope for the Gorongosa Restoration Project. Their presence is a testament to the ongoing success of wildlife reintroduction efforts in the park, a vital part of Mozambique’s conservation landscape.

Collaboration and Support: Partners in Conservation

The hyenas’ journey to Gorongosa would not have been possible without the support of the Mozambique Wildlife Alliance, which provided logistical and veterinary assistance, and the Karingani Game Reserve, which generously provided the hyenas. This successful reintroduction showcases the power of collaboration between local and international organisations dedicated to the preservation of wildlife and natural habitats.

As the hyenas settle into their new home, they will continue to play an important role in maintaining the health and diversity of Gorongosa’s ecosystem, contributing to the long-term success of one of the most ambitious wildlife restoration projects in Africa.
